“The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties is fundamental to the functioning of a state in the sphere of international law,” said Deputy Minister Piotr Wawrzyk in Warsaw at a conference organised by the MFA’s Legal and Treaty Department titled “50 years of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties in the context of the Polish treaty practice.”
The conference aimed to highlight the contemporary significance of one of the most important international agreements, the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, done at Vienna on 22 May 1969, with particular focus on the Polish treaty practice. During his speech, Deputy Minister Wawrzyk emphasised that the event complements Poland’s efforts to promote the respect for international law, which is our country’s motto during its non-permanent membership of the Security Council in 2018-2019. The deputy chief of the Polish MFA also referred to the 100th anniversary of Poland’s treaty practice. Furthermore, he noted that during that period Poland signed over 6,000 bilateral and 1,300 multilateral agreements.
The event brought together over two hundred Polish leading treaty law experts and practitioners, including the representatives of academia and public administration. The event was also attended by the members of Polish delegation who took part in the negotiations of the document in Vienna in 1968-1969. “It brings me particular satisfaction that we can celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties together with those who saw its beginnings and who, through their commitment, dedication and work, sought to make a tangible Polish contribution to the Vienna Conference and substantive contribution to the Convention itself,” stressed Deputy Minister Wawrzyk.
The conference was held under the honorary patronage of President Andrzej Duda. The Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland was represented by Deputy Minister Anna Surówka-Pasek, who read a letter from the president.
