Piotr Potocki is a son of Józef Alfred Potocki, who between 1919 and 1955 worked as a Polish diplomat at various diplomatic missions, including in London, Paris, and Angers. On 1 June 1944 he took up the post of chargé d’affaires of the Republic of Poland in Spain. His mission lasted until November 1955.

Now returned to the MFA, the silverware deposit was stored by the Potocki family in Madrid. It consists of a set of table cutlery that dates back to the period between 1932 and 1939 and is stamped with the name mark J.C. – for Józef Cynowski, and on the reverse with H. J. W-wa – for Henryk Juwiler. At current prices in antiques trade this kind of cutlery is worth approximately PLN 5,000 per kilo. The silverware weighs over 20 kilogrammes.

Upon the request of Minister Zbigniew Rau, Piotr Potocki agreed to hand the deposit over to the State Treasury.
