Conference “Western Balkans: Infrastructure and energy from a geopolitical perspective”
29.05.2019
“The process of growing mutual dependencies and connections means that transport and energy infrastructure has become an important element determining development policies,” Deputy Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk said at the international conference “Western Balkans: Infrastructure and energy from a geopolitical perspective.”
The conference is co-organized by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the editorial team of the geopolitical quarterly The Warsaw Institute Review. The event is part of Poland's presidency of the Berlin Process and is held ahead of the Western Balkans Summit, which will take place in July in Poznan. The meeting was attended by top scholars and experts, diplomats, representatives of NGOs, media and state administration from the Western Balkans and the European Union.
The conference’s fundamental purpose was to launch an expert debate on EU integration of the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Serbia) focusing on infrastructure and energy, in the context of global and local geopolitical processes. “The reinforcement of infrastructural connectivity, particularly with the rest of Europe, is of key importance for the Western Balkans. Poland is fully aware of the significance of infrastructural connections and networks. Furthermore, Polish experience proves that infrastructural expansion contributes to the overall development at the national, regional and European levels,” noted Deputy Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk in his capacity of the Government Plenipotentiary for the Western Balkans Summit.
