The Polish-Lithuanian consultations, which were held on Tuesday in Vilnius, focused on the new term of the European Commission, negotiations on a new long-term budget and climate neutrality.
Speaking with his counterpart Albinas Zananavičius, Deputy Minister Konrad Szymański said that Poland and Lithuania share a vision of the future EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2021-2027. Poland and Lithuania are also both in favour of an ambitious budget which will effectively address the challenges that Europe faces today.
The deputy ministers reiterated that Poland and Lithuania advocate solutions that have been tried and tested in the past, proving their high added value, such as cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. Deputy Minister Szymański emphasized that these treaty policies strengthen the convergence process in Europe, which still needs to be completed, and this is why they should not be limited.
Poland and Lithuania have a common position when it comes to climate policy. They believe that the EU’s future actions in this regard require the EU to take into account different conditions of the Member States.
At the end of the meeting, Poland’s deputy foreign minister said he hoped that the two countries will continue their successful cooperation during negotiations on the EU budget that are now underway, both bilaterally, and in the framework of the Friends of Cohesion group. “It is our priority to agree a budget that will suit all Europe,” said Deputy Minister Szymański.
