The talks focused on the state of bilateral relations and key developments in international politics, including the current situation in Europe and South America. Also discussed were the prospects for the development of economic and defence cooperation as well as cultural, academic, and research cooperation.

At a meeting in Santiago de Chile, Deputy Minister Lang and his Chilean counterpart Patricio Torres Espinosa discussed bilateral relations, joint economic and scientific projects, as well as cooperation at multilateral forums. They also exchanged assessments of the most important international issues. Both sides declared their willingness to develop political relations and efforts to step up economic cooperation, including further boosting trade. Other topics included amendments to the EU-Chile Association Agreement and the coming COP25 Climate Conference. During the meeting, the Chilean deputy foreign minister recalled Ignacy Domeyko, the Polish geologist and scientist. “Ignacy Domeyko is the person who binds us together. When we think about him, we are thinking about Poland,” underlined Deputy Minister Torres Espinosa.

In Lima, Deputy Minister Maciej Lang met with Secretary-General of Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Manuel Gerardo Talavera Espinar. The interlocutors discussed political, economic, and cultural cooperation and reviewed the legal and treaty basis of bilateral relations. They also welcomed the progress of negotiations on the agreement on legal assistance in criminal matters and the “Visit and Work” agreement. The talks also focused on cooperation at international forums, including the UN Security Council, and on the assessment of the current political and economic situation in Europe and Latin America. Also raised on this occasion were the situation in Venezuela and its impact on the LAC region. Moreover, the parties reaffirmed the importance of cooperation within the Pacific Alliance, in which Poland has been an observer since 2015. During his visit to Lima, Deputy Minister Lang also met with Gonzalo Rios Polastri, Peru’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, with whom he spoke about cooperation between the defence industries of Poland and Peru.

On Thursday 3 October, the undersecretary of state at the Polish MFA paid a visit to Bogota, where he met with his Colombian counterpart Francisco Javier Echeverri Lara. The consultations covered challenges to the peace process, the state of bilateral relations, joint development projects, including a sports diplomacy project, and the prospects for enhancing economic cooperation. The sides assessed the situation in the LAC region and welcomed the progress of negotiations on the “Visit and Work” agreement. Deputy Minister Lang stressed the importance that Poland attaches to diversifying its exports to non-European markets, i.e. to Pacific Alliance countries. He noted the growing interest in the academic exchange between Poland and Colombia, including the opportunities offered by the I. Łukasiewicz scholarships, which are becoming increasingly popular with Colombian students.
