Deputy Minister Paweł Jabłoński visits Tehran
10.10.2022
On October 8-9, 2022 Paweł Jabłoński, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland visited Iran. He took part in the Polish-Iranian political consultations, which take place regularly (with the exception of the COVID-19 pandemic) at the level of deputy foreign ministers. The last edition of the consultations took place in 2019.
The agenda of the visit included meetings with the vice-president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Massoud Mir-Kazemi, as well as representatives of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs and the head of the JCPOA negotiation team Ali Bagheri Kani, as well as Mehdi Safari, deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy.
The Polish-Iranian talks were an opportunity to discuss the most important issues in the field of bilateral cooperation, including consular matters, as well as to exchange views on the regional situation, as well as global and security issues. In the latter context, Minister Jabłoński pointed out that Russia's aggression against Ukraine is a breach of international law, and that Russia is committing crimes, including crimes against the civilian population. The deputy minister noted that the consequences of the Russian invasion are felt not only in Ukraine and other European countries, but also globally – in particular in terms of lowering the level of global food and energy security. The Polish deputy minister also stressed that any actions aimed at supporting Russia, including in particular the supply of weapons or military equipment, were unacceptable and should not take place.
An important topic of the talks was the ongoing negotiations on the renewal of the nuclear agreement (JCPOA). Poland supports the talks and emphasizes that the re-entry into force of the agreement, which is one of the foundations of the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction regimes, will be crucial for the security situation in the Middle East. A positive conclusion of the talks may also become an impulse for the development of economic relations, which would have a positive effect on both countries.
During the talks, the Polish deputy minister also referred to the recent social protests in Iran, emphasizing the need for non-violence, the need to explain the circumstances in which it was used – by conducting reliable and transparent investigations, as well as the legitimacy of releasing unjustified detainees from arrests and prisons.
Minister Paweł Jabłoński also laid a wreath at the Polish headquarters in the Armenian cemetery in Tehran. The visit took place in the framework of the 80th anniversary of the evacuation of General Władysław Anders' army to Iran, where 120 thousand Poles evacuated from the Soviet Union during World War II were provided with Iranian aid and hospitality. To this day, this gesture of solidarity is appreciated in Poland, constituting one of the most important chapters in the history of Polish-Iranian relations.
