24.06.2022
The talks between the deputy foreign ministers of Poland and Cyprus focused on the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the latter country’s European perspective, efforts to settle the Cyprus problem, and the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The diplomats also discussed the state of bilateral cooperation. They expressed satisfaction with the current dynamics of Polish-Cypriot relations, which was reflected in the official visit of Poland’s president to Cyprus in October last year. During the visit, a number of important bilateral agreements were signed.
The deputy foreign ministers discussed the actions taken to date regarding the war in Ukraine. Secretary of State Szynkowski vel Sęk stressed the need to step up support for Ukraine and argued for the proposal of restrictive measures that could be included in the seventh round of EU sanctions. The discussion also covered the risk of a food crisis resulting from the Russian aggression. Both officials underlined the need to further reinforce assistance to Ukraine. The deputy heads of Polish and Cypriot diplomacy also agreed that it is necessary to continue the EU’s enlargement policy towards the Western Balkan countries.
The Cypriot deputy foreign minister presented the current prospects for settling the Cyprus problem and the situation in the abandoned district of Varosha, Famagusta. The diplomats also talked about the political and security environment in the Eastern Mediterranean region as well as about migration issues.
