09.09.2022
On 9 September, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Piotr Wawrzyk opened an information meeting on Poland’s candidature for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council. The meeting was also attended by Undersecretary of State Paweł Lewandowski of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister who is responsible for telecommunication and digitalisation issues.
In his address to the assembled representatives of the diplomatic corps in Warsaw, Deputy Minister Piotr Wawrzyk recalled that in 2021 Poland celebrated the 100th anniversary of its membership of the ITU. Bearing in mind the key importance of the future of telecommunication and the global digital market, and wishing to cooperate with international partners who consider it crucial, the Polish government announced Poland’s candidature for an ITU Council member for 2023-2026.
The ITU Council election will take place during the Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union, to be held from 26 September to 14 October 2022 in Bucharest. The Council, appointed for a term of four years, is tasked with overseeing the ITU’s current policy, strategy and activity in the broadly understood area of telecommunication and digitalisation. Poland has been a Council member since 2010 and is currently seeking to secure its fourth term.
