EU envoys and ambassadors for Eastern Partnership visit Armenia and Azerbaijan

On 15-18 November 2022, on the initiative of Poland, Armenia and Azerbaijan hosted a group of envoys and ambassadors for the Eastern Partnership from twelve European Union member states (Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Germany, Poland, and Sweden) who were accompanied by the Special Envoy of the European External Action Service for the Eastern Partnership.

Eastern Partnership

The officials took part in meetings with representatives of the two countries’ authorities. The aim of the visit to the Caucasus was to continue dialogue on the future of the Eastern Partnership policy, particularly to obtain information on the partner states’ expectations in the context of the new geopolitical situation. 

While in Armenia, the EU officials met with President Vahagn Khachaturyan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the minister and deputy minister of foreign affairs, the human rights defender, the vice president of the National Assembly, the secretary of the Security Office, and with representatives of civil society organisations.

In Azerbaijan, the EU diplomats were received by President Ilham Aliyev and met with the minister of foreign affairs, the chairman of the Committee for International and Inter-parliamentary Relations, the head of the National Agency for Mine Action, and with representatives of civil society organisations.

The envoys and ambassadors also took part in briefing sessions with heads of EU delegations and heads of diplomatic missions of EU member states.

The visits reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to the Eastern Partnership policy and the importance of the EU’s relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan.
