EU’s Big Five foreign ministers meet in Berlin
12.12.2024
On 12 December 2024, Berlin hosted a meeting of foreign ministers of Poland, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain (EU Big Five), their counterparts from the United Kingdom and Ukraine, and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The ministerial was held to follow up with the talks initiated in Warsaw on 19 November.
The top diplomats agreed on further support for Ukraine and future measures to step up transatlantic cooperation. They stressed the necessity to strengthen EU member states’ defence capabilities.
The ministers discussed the lines of prospective cooperation with incoming President Donald Trump’s administration. They reaffirmed close coordination between Europe and the United States in foreign and security policy to prevent weakening of the North Atlantic Alliance. The Berlin talks highlighted the need to redouble efforts in countering the conventional and hybrid threats posed by Russia and its partners.
The participants declared continued political, military, and financial support for Ukraine. They stressed that the scenarios for resolving the conflict and ending the Russian aggression must be developed in close coordination with the Ukrainian authorities and with Europe’s security interests in mind.
