Finland starts its EU Council presidency

22.07.2019

“The beginning of a new institutional and political cycle is a good opportunity to analyse EU priorities for the years to come. Poland will be fully involved in productive cooperation with Finland in this respect,” said Minister Jacek Czaputowicz during his meeting with EU Member States ambassadors accredited to Poland.

On the invitation of the Ambassador of Finland Juha Ottman, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz attended a meeting to celebrate the inauguration of Finnish presidency of the EU Council. The motto of the presidency is: “Sustainable Europe – sustainable future”, while its programme focuses on four priorities: strengthening common values and the rule of law, making the EU competitive and socially inclusive, strengthening the EU’s position as a global leader in climate action, and comprehensive protection of the citizens’ security.

Minister Czaputowicz presented Poland’s position on the implementation of the Strategic Agenda 2019-2024, future multiannual financial framework, European single market and climate policy, security issues, migration and EU enlargement. “We are pleased that the new EU Strategic Agenda clearly sets the goals in the ambitious plan of a single market and the development of transatlantic relations. We will support Finnish presidency to implement the goals of the Agenda,” said Minister Czaputowicz.

Polish foreign minister underlined that all Member States have to be sure that their vital interests are taken into account in the EU decision making process. Fundamental treaty rules of unity, loyalty and subsidiarity should set the direction for future institutional cooperation. Minister Jacek Czaputowicz pointed out the need to take actions to further develop the European single market. Special attention shall be paid to the services sector and implementation of sustainable climate policies which ensure that the Member States decide on their own energy mix. The minister also referred to the strengthening of cooperation with the Western Balkans partner states and continuation of the enlargement process, which is a strategic investment in peace, stability and development in Europe
