Food security and the fight against Russian disinformation was the topic of the meeting between Deputy Minister Paweł Jabłoński and the diplomatic corps of African and Middle Eastern countries
23.06.2022
On Thursday, June 23, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Paweł Jabłoński together with the ambassadors of Lithuania and Romania and the minister-counselor at the Ukrainian embassy met with the ambassadors of African and Middle Eastern countries as well as the representatives of the diplomatic corps from these countries. The subject of the meeting was the security of food supplies, including in particular the actions taken in this matter by Poland and other EU countries, as well as countering Russian disinformation.
Russia's brutal aggression against Ukraine is a serious impediment to transporting Ukrainian export goods by sea. This creates a huge problem not only for the Ukrainian economy, but also for countries dependent on the import of Ukrainian food, including a large part of those in Africa and the Middle East.
Deputy Minister Jabłoński thanked the representatives of the diplomatic missions of African and Middle East countries for humanitarian aid, as well as for their refusal of buying Ukrainian grain stolen by Russia during the war. He also presented the representatives of the corps with facts about the causes of the crisis and described the mechanisms of Russian disinformation:
- Sanctions are not the cause of the blockade of exports. The sole cause are the actions of Russia. It is Russia that blocks Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea, through which Ukrainian production has been exported so far, and it is Russia - not for the first time in its history - that is using hunger as a weapon and is blackmailing the world. The deputy head of Polish diplomacy said that the Kremlin consciously intends to cause a food crisis and a global humanitarian catastrophe.
The deputy minister presented Poland's activities facilitating grain supplies from Ukraine, as well as the challenges facing the international community aimed at preventing food shortages. The actions of their countries in this regard were also presented by the ambassadors of Lithuania and Romania, and the representative of the Ukrainian embassy described the current situation in terms of logistical challenges and thanked for the support provided so far.
Deputy Minister Jabłoński emphasized that we cannot accept blackmail and lift the sanctions imposed on Russia in exchange for lifting the Russian blockade. Strong international pressure on Russia and multifaceted support for Ukraine remain the only ways to stop Russian aggression in the long term. He pointed out that not only Ukraine, but all countries suffering from the food crisis are victims of Russia's unprovoked aggression.
