Human Rights Day
Observed on 10 December, Human Rights Day falls on the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly – the key document setting international standards of human rights protection.
The leading theme of this year’s celebrations is “Equality”, which refers to Art. 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.
Poland is actively taking efforts to promote and strengthen human rights protection at the international fora. The upcoming 2022 will be Poland’s third and last year of its membership of the UN Human Rights Council. During its term, our country has initiated a number of activities at the Council, such as mobilising the international community to stop violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Belarus.
In 2021, Poland marked the 30th anniversary of joining the Council of Europe and signing the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. This year, also the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), located in Warsaw, celebrated the 30th anniversary of its operation. Organised on this occasion, in cooperation with Poland, the Office’s anniversary conference highlighted the importance of collaboration in promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms within the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. In 2022, Warsaw will assume the OSCE chairmanship which will be characterised by a perspective focused on the individual and their rights.
