Meeting of directors of Polish Institutes

25.10.2022

Launched in Warsaw on 25 October 2022, the meeting of directors of Polish Institutes has focused on the opportunities and challenges facing Polish public and cultural diplomacy in the context of the war in Ukraine and the digital era.

As Ukraine’s main ally, Poland must not let the world forget about the ongoing conflict just across our borders. Maintaining interest in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, enhancing Poland’s image as a country that stands in solidarity with those in need, revealing the true nature of Russia and its criminal regime, and integrating Ukrainian aspects in projects run by Polish missions abroad – these will be the strategic objectives of Polish diplomacy, including public and cultural diplomacy.

“In many countries, where the media turn a deaf ear to the war in Ukraine or distort the truth about it, reliable and updated communication by Polish missions is extremely important. Whenever possible, we do our utmost to provide Ukrainians with opportunities and channels to show the drama of the war ravaging their country, the destruction of property, and human suffering,” said Secretary of State at the MFA Piotr Wawrzyk when opening the meeting.

Hosted in Warsaw, the event has brought together representatives of 25 Polish Institutes from all over the world. The participants will discuss possible actions aimed at civil society in Belarus, creating conditions for the development of democracy and political dialogue. Other topics will include the promotion of Polish culture and language abroad, as well as science and historical diplomacy.

“In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and Poland’s commitment to support the country, we should consistently remind everyone that the fight against tyranny and totalitarianisms is in the Polish DNA, as is the gene of solidarity,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Wawrzyk.

The diplomats and guests will also discuss the use of modern technologies, crucial in the digital era, for telling the world about Poland. Modern communication techniques will be presented, including a film made in virtual reality (VR).

To enhance partnership for shaping and strengthening Poland’s image abroad in a more efficient and consistent manner, the organisers have invited representatives of the world of culture and science, institutions responsible for promoting Poland abroad, as well as advertising and interactive agencies.

There are 25 Polish Institutes reporting to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They form a network that stretches from the USA to Israel to Japan. The majority of the Institutes operate in Europe. Their main task is to reach artists, experts and opinion-makers abroad, present information about Poland, promote Polish culture, history, science, language, and heritage, ensure bilateral cultural exchange and the presence of Polish culture in host countries, and to establish long-lasting relations and contacts with foreign partners.
