The foreign ministers discussed eastern and security policies, including energy security, and bilateral relations. The talks focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its political, military, and humanitarian consequences.

The Danish minister for foreign affairs thanked Poland for its efforts to support Ukraine. He emphasised the involvement of his country in this regard, pointing out financial and military support initiatives, as well as those concerning the future reconstruction of Ukraine. The ministers discussed necessary steps in the context of security policy in view of Russia’s aggressive policy, in particular efforts to increase NATO’s deterrence and defence capabilities. “Our countries have a similar assessment of the security situation. We believe that the European security architecture must be built taking into consideration the permanent threat posed by Russia. Its most important element should be credible deterrence,” stressed Minister Rau. The top diplomats agreed that the course of the war will mostly be determined by the Ukrainian army’s resolve, as well as the West’s assistance in terms of equipment and training. The officials highlighted the necessity to secure Kyiv’s other needs, including those related to energy and humanitarian aid, and to take actions to rebuild the country after the war.

The foreign ministers also spoke about political and economic cooperation in the bilateral format, as well as at the fora of regional and international organisations. Poland and Denmark attach particular importance to cooperation in the energy sector, which has become strategic in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Polish and the Danish side agree that the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, a flagship example of Polish-Danish partnership, not only enhanced bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, but also greatly contributed to strengthening Europe’s energy security. Another important area of cooperation between the two countries is offshore wind energy. Minister Rau stressed that Warsaw welcomes the launch of long-term cooperation between Polish and Danish companies in the development of wind farms in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea.
