“Transatlantic relations are key for us. Our part of Europe cannot be secure without the support and strong ties with the US,” said Minister Czaputowicz speaking at a debate on Building a Transatlantic Agenda to Secure the Next Century, organised by the Atlantic Council in Washington DC as part of a conference, The United States and Central Europe. Celebrating Europe Whole and Free, Building the Next Century Together.

Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said that the Polish-US military and energy cooperation was developing very well and spoke about plans to deploy an additional one thousand US soldiers in Poland and the US’s role in diversifying gas supply sources for Poland. “The Joint Declaration on Defence Cooperation Regarding United States Force Posture in the Republic of Poland that was signed recently by the Polish and US presidents is evidence of our closer bilateral relations in the key area of security,” he declared.

Minister Czaputowicz advocated strengthening harmonious cooperation within the transatlantic community that is facing mounting challenges to the international order, specifically in the Middle East, and threats from Russia and China. He also mentioned how important joining US and NATO by many Central and Eastern European countries, including Poland, was for bringing to life the concept of a “free and indivisible Europe. “We have to conduct NATO’s ‘open door’ policy for all European countries that meet membership criteria,” stressed Minister Jacek Czaputowicz.

Speaking about the Three Seas Initiative, Minister Czaputowicz observed that one of its most important goals is to create an infrastructure that will contribute to enhancing the region’s energy security. “Cooperation between countries taking part in the Three Seas Initiative is key, especially in the face of the Nord Stream II project. “Energy cooperation is also an important basis for Polish-US relations,” added Minister Czaputowicz. “We have common interests in this area which we are pursuing through bilateral agreements for the delivery of US LNG to Poland,” he said.

During the first day of his visit to Washington DC, Minister Czaputowicz also met with members of Washington think-tanks and US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook, with whom he discussed the Middle East situation and plans to mark the first International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief that Poland initiated at the UN.

In the evening, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz attended a reception at the US Department of State honouring people engaged in activities to protect religious freedom. It was part of the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom organised in Washington DC on 16-18 July 2019.
