Recently, there have been a number of international events on Ukraine: the Ukraine Recovery Conference, a G7 summit, and a peace summit in Switzerland. This demonstrates the West’s strong commitment to support Ukraine. Poland welcomed the decision that Ukraine could use allied-supplied weapons to strike targets inside Russian territory.

Minister Sikorski further noted with satisfaction the intergovernmental conference taking place tomorrow which launches EU accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova. 

While discussing the situation in the Middle East, Poland’s top diplomat stressed that Poland supports the US peace plan. It is the best short-term option to stop further bloodshed in the Gaza Strip. Poland also fully supports the EU’s cooperation with Arab countries under the leadership of the EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process and the initiative to convene an EU-Israel Association Council.

Minister Sikorski said that EU enlargement remains an important tool for maintaining stability and security in the region, and thus in Europe as a whole. During Poland’s presidency, we will support EU enlargement in both directions: to the east and south. It is crucial that candidate countries align their policies with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, a clear sign of their geopolitical choice based on the common values and principles that underpin the EU.

​EU foreign ministers also discussed developments in Georgia. 

The Council adopted a 14th package of sanctions against Russia and the allocation of windfall profits from the Russian Central Bank’s immobilised assets to Ukraine.
