During today’s meeting in Warsaw, the head of Polish diplomacy briefed EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders about the latest initiatives by the Polish authorities to restore the rule of law and constitutional order in Poland.
Minister Sikorski pointed out that the Polish authorities’ resolve to carry out reforms should be taken into account by the European Commission in the context of fully unlocking EU funds for Poland. He stressed that Poland attaches particular importance to the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights concerning the rule of law. Their implementation, the top Polish diplomat added, is a priority for the current government.
At the meeting, the officials also discussed Russia’s accountability for international crimes committed against Ukraine and the need to use frozen Russian assets to support and rebuild the country. Minister Sikorski recalled Poland’s firm position that it is crucial for the international community to hold accountable both Russia as a state and all individual perpetrators of the crimes committed by Russian forces on Ukrainian territory, as well as to require the aggressor state to cover the costs of reconstruction for the country it attacked.
