During the meeting, Minister Sikorski emphasised the growing importance of UNESCO within the United Nations system in the face of complex global challenges.

He spoke highly of the measures UNESCO has been taking to help Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion. The minister strongly condemned the attacks on cultural infrastructure and educational facilities across Ukraine as the Russian model of purposefully seeking to erase Ukrainian identity. Minister Sikorski also highlighted Poland’s meaningful efforts to protect Ukraine’s culture.

The chief of Polish diplomacy gave reassurance of support for UNESCO’s work towards upholding freedom of speech. He noted that the safety of journalists is among Poland’s priorities at UNESCO, pointing out the country’s measures in that regard.

The meeting also offered an opportunity to discuss items on the Organization’s current agenda and possibilities for enhanced cooperation between Poland and UNESCO in the fields of science, culture and education.
