27.05.2024
Monday’s meeting focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
In a discussion on Russia’s assault on Ukraine, the chief of Polish diplomacy noted the need to strengthen military support for Kyiv. In this context, he called for an immediate compromise regarding the operationalisation of financing further support for Ukraine from the European Peace Facility. He welcomed the EU’s decision to use the extraordinary revenues from Russia’s Central Bank’s immobilised assets to support Ukraine, a first step towards using the assets themselves. Minister Sikorski also called for further reducing gaps in the sanctions regime against Russia, urgent adoption of the 14th sanctions package, and the harmonisation of sectoral sanctions targeting Belarus and Russia. He underlined that launching accession talks with Ukraine within several weeks should be a priority. Moreover, the head of the Polish MFA pointed to the increasing number of Russian hybrid attacks across EU countries, including Poland, in response to which the Polish authorities decided to restrict the freedom of movement of Russian diplomats on the territory of our country.
During a discussion on the developments in the Middle East, attended by the ministers of the region, it was agreed that halting hostilities and increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza remain top priorities. The participants also reiterated their support for the two-state solution and the need for the EU to cooperate with the Arab states in this respect.
