11.10.2022
On 11 October, Minister Zbigniew Rau met in Warsaw with the new Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Rastislav Káčer. After Prague, this was the second foreign visit of Minister Káčer in his new capacity.
The talks covered the Russian aggression against Ukraine and bilateral relations, also in the context of marking the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Poland and Slovakia (1 January 1993). The diplomats reaffirmed their willingness to further strengthen mutual relations in the bilateral, regional, and European dimensions. They also noted the particular importance of neighbourly relations, including in the area of security.
“Poland and Slovakia are working to support Ukraine while ensuring their own security. At the request of the Slovak government, we decided to strengthen Slovakia’s security. I’m glad that Polish jets are protecting the Slovak sky,” said Minister Rau.
The foreign ministers discussed the security situation in Europe, the way forward to support Ukraine in its fight against the Russian aggression, and the plans to adopt further sanctions against the Russian aggressor. They unanimously condemned the sham referenda held in four Ukrainian provinces and agreed that there could be no return to the status quo ante in EU-Russian relations.
Poland’s and Slovakia’s top diplomats confirmed their commitment to continue to actively support policies aimed at energy self-sufficiency for both countries.
“We are very satisfied with the fact that the construction of the gas interconnector between Poland and Slovakia has been completed successfully. This is one of the projects that contribute not only to strengthening energy security in this part of Europe, but also bring us closer to functioning without Russian gas under the current conditions,” said Minister Rau.
