On 21 June 2023, Poland’s top diplomat Zbigniew Rau met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia Margus Tsahkna.
The talks focused on further development of bilateral cooperation, situation in the region in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, support for the combatant Ukraine and the preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius.
“For many years, we have engaged in a fruitful cooperation with Estonia, which is based on shared aspirations and interests, as well as on similar positions with regard to security, eastern and regional policies, energy, infrastructure and several aspects of the European agenda,” emphasised Minister Rau.
The interlocutors agreed that relations between Poland and Estonia are cordial, based on mutual trust, and that the dialogue between the two countries, also as part of multilateral and, in particular, regional cooperation, is fruitful and intensive.
The ministers also agreed that the difficult situation in the region, caused by the unprecedented since the Second World War brutal aggression of Russia against Ukraine, calls for even closer cooperation and greater coordination of activities. The top diplomats highlighted the need to take actions to hold Russia accountable for crimes committed in Ukraine’s territory.
The talks also covered the possibilities of supporting the processes of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and NATO, as well as the challenges related to the functioning of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
The visit of Minister Margus Tsahkna to Warsaw was his first visit to Poland in the capacity of Estonia’s foreign minister.
