“The world is at one of its decisive moments in its history. More than ever, parliamentarians face uncertainty about the future, and the future will be defined either by our ability to be guided by universal rules founded in our humanity, or by the whims of mighty forces,” said minister Rau. In his capacity as OSCE’s Chairman-in-Office, the head of Polish diplomacy opened a debate during the annual Parliamentary Assembly in Birmingham.

During his visit to Birmingham, Minister Rau met with President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Margareta Cederfelt and Polish parliamentarians. He then reiterated that parliamentary cooperation is a vital element of the Organisation, and its activities related to the promotion of dialogue and the strengthening of multilateralism are now more important than ever before.

The OSCE’s Chairman-in-Office noted that the support for and solidarity with Ukraine are decisive for maintaining long-term stability and security in Europe. “I hope that the whole OSCE community will draw the necessary conclusions to return to and then strengthen our fundamental values. The international laws enshrined in the UN Charter and reflected in the Helsinki Final Act, and the Charter of Paris for a New Europe are our signposts,” he added.

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which was established in 1992, is mainly tasked with facilitating inter-parliamentary dialogue to implement the Organisation’s goals, strengthen security and co-operation in three dimensions: politico-military, economic and environmental, and human rights. There are 323 parliamentarians from 57 participating States in the Assembly. The Polish Sejm and Senate’s delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly comprises eight representatives and eight deputy representatives, including six MPs and two senators.
