Minister Rau takes part in Polish-Lithuanian intergovernmental consultations in Vilnius

16.09.2022

“Poland and Lithuania are among the major suppliers of aid for Ukraine. With our joint measures, we set an example for Western partners,” Minister Rau said at a plenary session attended by the prime ministers of Poland and Lithuania.

During the consultations at the Lithuanian MFA, Ministers Zbigniew Rau and Gabrielius Landsbergis discussed a number of issues concerning bilateral and multilateral relations. The talks focused on the current situation in the region and joint security measures, including in NATO in the context of the Alliance’s Vilnius Summit next year.

The chief diplomats agreed that it is crucial to continue to support Ukraine, and that the Lublin Triangle, a Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian cooperation format established in 2020, is one of the useful means to that end. The ministers also talked about the present situation at the border with Belarus.

A shared approach to security issues is a solid base for further consolidation of bilateral relations. Bringing up the unresolved matters concerning the Polish national minority, Poland’s top diplomat emphasised that it should be imperative for us in the current international setting to ensure that nothing casts a shadow over our cooperation.

Poland and Lithuania have been in the lead among the European Union countries that know how dangerous it is to underestimate the threat from the East, and they have been warning their Western partners of it for years now. The Polish-Lithuanian security dialogue has significantly gained in intensity in connection with last year’s hybrid attack of the Belarusian regime on our borders and Russia’s aggressive politics.

On 16 September 2022, Vilnius hosted the third round of Polish-Lithuanian intergovernmental consultations. The talks between the governments of Poland and Lithuania involved a meeting of the prime ministers and a plenary as well as thematic tables on foreign and internal affairs, energy, transport, economy, finances, justice, social affairs and employment, health, culture, digitalisation and education, science and sports. The consultations concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration by the prime ministers.
