The talks with High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission Josep Borrell focused on the situation in Ukraine. The matters under discussion included comprehensive and long-term political, financial and military support for Kyiv, and the process of EU accession negotiations.
The heads of Polish and EU diplomacies spoke about using EU financial instruments to support Ukraine. At the meeting, the officials also discussed Russia’s accountability for international crimes committed against Ukraine and the need to use frozen Russian assets to support and rebuild the country. Minister Sikorski recalled Poland’s firm position that it is crucial for the international community to hold accountable both Russia as a state and all individual perpetrators of the crimes committed by Russian forces on Ukrainian territory, as well as to require the aggressor state to cover the costs of reconstruction for the country it attacked. Minister Sikorski and Vice-President Borrell also discussed several topics of the European and international agenda, such as the situation in the Middle East, or transatlantic relations in the context of this year’s presidential elections in the United States.
