04.09.2024

The head of the Polish MFA is visiting Manila, where he met with President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo, and Secretary of National Defence Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

Meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The talks covered many subjects such as economic cooperation, geopolitics—including regional and global conflicts—migration, and cooperation in information technologies.

During the meeting with Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo, Minister Sikorski noted not only similar challenges ahead of Poland and the Philippines, but also the common values that drive them. The Polish top diplomat recalled the history of bilateral relations, including the opening of embassies in Warsaw and Manila. He also referred to a series of recent political consultations and provided the post-colonial country's president with the Polish perspective on the recent great colonial war in Europe which Russia is waging against Ukraine.

Minister Sikorski has hoped that his visit to Manila will contribute to the enhancement of bilateral relations. “The current friendly relations between our countries were not intense enough in the past,” noted Minister Sikorski. He underlined the presence of Polish Deputy Ministers of National Defence Paweł Zalewski and of Agriculture and Rural Development Michał Kołodziejczak, which underlines the practical dimension of Polish–Philippine relations. The minister also announced that further visits on different levels will take place soon.

Minister Sikorski recalled that last month he submitted a request for Poland to become a party to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. In this context, he expressed hope for Manila’s support for our efforts and declared that during its EU presidency in 2025, Poland will strive to enhance the Philippines’ relations with the European Union.

At the end of his visit to Asia, on Thursday, the head of Polish diplomacy will deliver a lecture on security at the Stratbase ADR Institute, which is an international research organisation that provides an in-depth analysis of economic, social, political, and strategic issues affecting the Philippines and the Indo-Pacific region.
