Minister Zbigniew Rau meets with Annalena Baerbock
10.12.2021
The new chief of German diplomacy arrived in Warsaw on a one-day visit. Minister Rau congratulated his German counterpart on assuming the office of foreign minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, and expressed his appreciation for it having been her third, following Paris and Brussels, foreign visit since taking on this post.
The ministers reviewed bilateral relations, including difficult, though key, from Poland’s perspective, issues such as the Polish community’s rights in Germany, the commemoration of Polish victims of the Second World War, reparations and war compensation for Poland. “I am satisfied that the new federal government’s coalition agreement contains the provision referring to the Bundestag resolution of 30 October 2020 on establishing a remembrance site for the Polish victims of the Second World War,” underscored the head of Polish MFA. He also expressed hope that the resolution will be implemented shortly during the new Bundestag term and that the final shape of a place devoted to the martyrdom of Poles will take into account its exceptional historical context and Polish sensitivity.
With regard to the international agenda, the top diplomats discussed, among other things, the situation at the Polish-Belarusian border and exchanged views on threats posed by the increasingly aggressive Russia’s policy. Covered was also energy security, and particularly Nord Stream 2. Minister Annalena Baerbock shares Poland’s concerns and its critical stance towards the pipeline, especially in the context of threats to eastern policy. “We are content with such an unambiguous position on the project’s implementation and hope it will be clearly demonstrated by the German government’s actions,” highlighted Minister Rau.
Minister Zbigniew Rau expressed satisfaction that Germany, like Poland, is interested in providing fresh impetus to the consultations in the Weimar Triangle formula. Saying that, he hoped that foreign ministers of this format could meet soon, with Poland hosting the event.
