Minister Zbigniew Rau’s address marking the third anniversary of the fraudulent presidential elections in Belarus
09.08.2023
Our dear Neighbours, Belarusians,
It’s been three years since the fraudulent presidential elections in your country. We remember your steadfast resolve. In the face of great dishonesty, you have shown your willingness to live in a free and democratic state. Your resistance was met with brutal retaliation. The regime’s violence hit a large part of society. Mass arrests, beatings, intimidation and even killings - this is how the authorities respond to citizens’ desire to live in dignity. Belarusian society, including the Polish national minority, has been deprived of opportunities for normal development. Hundreds of thousands of you have left your Homeland, fleeing repression and a lack of prospects. For most of this great migration, it’s Poland that has become a safe haven. In our country, you can pursue your skills and entrepreneurship although we understand that many of you want to return home as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the spiral of violence continues. Your fellow countrymen at home are subjected to ruthless propaganda.
I’m confident, however, that one day your Free Homeland will welcome you back so that it can fully prosper and thrive. The Belarusian regime supports a terrible war that the Kremlin has launched against an independent Ukraine. This makes many of you voice your objection to bending your Motherland to Moscow’s imperialist policies. Against the backdrop of growing Russification, you are increasingly drawing from your history, rich culture, language and unique identity. For this, you are also facing repression from the regime. Looking for your roots and caring for your own heritage is the best testimony to how much you love your Homeland and care for its future. By cherishing your Belarusian identity, you discover that you are part of the European family. Poland supports your country’s hopes and European aspirations. We Poles remember our own difficult history. This is why we fully understand your desire to live in a free State of Belarus.
I believe that it will be yours again.
