Ministers for European affairs of Poland and France hold consultations
28.01.2019
On 28 January, Secretary of State for European Affairs Konrad Szymański met with his French counterpart, Nathalie Loiseau.
The consultations focused on current European agenda items, such as Brexit, the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and issues related to internal market. The officials agreed that more efforts are needed to guarantee that the United Kingdom leaves the European Union based on a withdrawal agreement. The worst-case scenario would be a no-deal Brexit, which would be harmful for both sides. As regards the MFF, there is a consensus that negotiations should not be rushed at all cost. “In terms of the post-2020 MFF negotiations, common agricultural policy and cohesion will be key for both Poland and France,” said Minister Szymański. Furthermore, the ministers shared a common view on keeping the European Development Fund outside of the Multiannual Financial Framework and on the separate character of the European Neighbourhood Policy financing instrument. Despite persisting differences concerning some social issues connected with the functioning of the single market, in particular transport and posted workers, Minister Szymański noted that the differences stem from the choice of measures and the role of the EU in terms of social policy. The ministers also discussed the growing importance and the challenges connected with wilful disinformation that both countries are faced with more and more often.
