25.07.2024
A committee chaired by Poland’s former president Lech Wałęsa has decided to award this year’s relaunched Lech Wałęsa Solidarity Prize to Pavel Latushka, a Belarusian opposition activist and deputy head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus.
The prize is awarded by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for promoting and supporting democratic values. Established in 2014, it was deactivated as soon as after 2015.
A diplomat, former director of the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre, former minister of culture, and now an opponent of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, Pavel Latushka was sentenced to 18 years in prison by a judgment given by default in Belarus.
The prize will be presented during an official event on 18 September.
