Poland assumes Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region

Undersecretary of State Marek Prawda took part in an event organised today in Warsaw to launch Poland’s one-year Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region**—one of the EU’s four macro-regional strategies, a framework that encompasses also the Adriatic and Ionian, the Alpine, and the Danube regions.

The meeting was attended by stakeholders from the Strategy countries, namely Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, and Sweden, representatives of the European Commission and the Interreg programme, coordinators of the different thematically divided Policy Areas, and representatives of Polish institutions engaged in implementing the Strategy.

“This year sees the 15th anniversary of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The Strategy has contributed significantly to strengthening security and stability in the region as well as the resilience of countries and societies,” Deputy Minister Prawda said. He added that the Strategy has built close regional ties that translate into a tangible increase in mutual trust and understanding. “Thanks to that sense of community, we can now face new threats and challenges together,” Poland’s deputy foreign minister said. 

As part of its Presidency, Poland is committed to ensuring effective implementation of the three general objectives of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region: Save the Sea, Connect the Region, and Increase Prosperity. The matters of enhancing security and resilience in the Baltic Sea region, including greater involvement of Ukraine in the Strategy activities, remain high on the agenda.

Initiated in 2009, the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) is the first macro-regional strategy set up in the EU. It involves eight EU Member States situated on the Baltic Sea and inhabited by 80 million people, equalling nearly 16% of the EU population. The Strategy members are as follows: Denmark, Germany (Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein), Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, and Sweden. The Strategy’s functional and structural framework has been outlined in revised EUSBSR Action Plan, the initiative’s key roadmap published as a Staff Working Document on 15 February 2021. It sets out the main objectives of cooperation within EUSBSR, namely to Save the Sea, Connect the Region, and Increase Prosperity.
