Poland enhances its diplomatic presence in the Balkans
28.08.2023
A new Polish diplomatic mission has been set up in the Republic of Serbia—Polish Institute seated in Belgrade. By way of decision of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, it started operating on 28 August 2023 as Poland’s 26th establishment of this type globally.
The Polish Institute in Belgrade will support public and cultural diplomacy in the Western Balkans.
The launch of the Polish Institute in Belgrade attests to Poland’s increased commitment to develop relations with the Republic of Serbia and the Western Balkans.
Polish Institutes, supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disseminate information about Poland and promote its national heritage, culture, history, science and language. They foster cultural exchange and make sure that Polish culture is present in the social life of respective countries. They reach broad circles of foreign artists, experts, scientists, and opinion-makers.
In addition, they ensure the implementation of international obligations arising from cultural agreements and programmes entered into by Poland and other countries.
The task of the Polish Institutes is also to establish lasting contacts with foreign partners active in the sphere of international cultural exchange, e.g. within the framework of European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC).
The first Polish Institute was set up in Bucharest, Romania, in 1937. Besides Belgrade, Poland recently opened such Institute in 2018 in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.
