Poland joins Canadian–Dutch initiative to combat disinformation
29.10.2024
“Global Declaration on Information Integrity Online is a Canadian–Dutch initiative Poland endorses and wishes to join” - said Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski.
“Given the global nature of disinformation campaigns, close international cooperation is required to counter foreign information manipulation and interference. Our intention to join the Global Declaration on Information Integrity Online initiative adds to Poland’s substantial efforts in that area” - said Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski.
The Declaration contributes to a debate on developing an international framework for online information protection and reliability. It is grounded in international law, in particular human rights treaties. The Declaration highlights equality and freedom of expression and the media. It also seeks to draw attention to the challenges of AI development and their impact on the information sphere and democratic values.
The term “information integrity” is defined in that Declaration as an information ecosystem that produces accurate, trustworthy, and reliable information, meaning that people can rely on the accuracy and trustworthiness of the information they access while being exposed to a variety of ideas and opinions.
So far, 34 countries have announced they will join and endorse the Declaration, with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Japan among them.
The document was presented at the UN General Assembly in New York in September 2023 by Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly and the then Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot.
