Poland makes two contributions of USD 2 million in total for UN agencies operating in Gaza, as humanitarian situation of local civilians becomes dramatic

24.04.2024

Since 2007, Poland has continuously supported Palestine under the development cooperation programme. After 7 October 2023, we have considerably increased our humanitarian aid, by making additional contributions to UNRWA, UNICEF, and the WFP (the World Food Programme), and provided medical assistance to hospitals in Egypt which also treat Gazan patients.

In 2023, the MFA also financed development projects in Palestinian territories, implemented by Polish non-governmental organisations and the Representation of the Republic of Poland to Ramallah. Polish experts were delegated to the WHO mission responsible for medical evacuation and water treatment in the Gaza Strip.

Due to a dramatic humanitarian situation of civilians in Gaza, including acute food insecurity, and the fact that aid supplies to Gaza have become extremely difficult, the MFA decided to allocate USD 1 million to the WFP and USD 1 million to UNRWA.

The WFP is one of Poland's important humanitarian aid partners. Every month, the WFP provides more than 1.45 million Gazans with food. The Polish contribution is a response to the WFP's announcement that the agency needs USD 760 million to continue its humanitarian operations in Gaza until the end of 2024.

Our contribution to the budget of UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) is a continuation of Poland's efforts so far to help Palestinian refugees in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
