Poland’s candidacy for Council of International Maritime Organization
20.11.2023
On 20 November, Underecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wojciech Gerwel opened an information meeting on Poland’s candidacy for the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Addressing the diplomatic corps in Warsaw, Deputy Minister Gerwel emphasised that Poland treats its involvement in multilateral fora not only as its foreign policy priority but also as a duty and responsibility towards its partners. “We cannot settle for merely being a member of the UN system—we want to play the role of an architect who shapes it,” said the MFA Undersecretary of State. Deputy Minister Gerwel highlighted Poland’s expertise and long experience in the maritime sector, a fact which will surely lead to a more effective utilisation of IMO’s potential for continued improvement in navigation safety and security, for ensuring appropriate working conditions for crew members, and for protecting the oceans.

The event was held in coordination with the Ministry of Infrastructure, the representatives of which outlined Poland’s priorities as an IMO Council member during a media briefing.
The voting on Poland’s possible membership of the IMO Council will be held in London on 1 December 2023.
