Polish diaspora policy returns to MFA

28.06.2024

On 1 July 2024, statutory provisions will enter into force resulting in the MFA taking over the competences and budget of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister regarding the care of the Polish community and Poles abroad. From this day on, the Polish diplomacy will supervise the calls for proposals and the implementation of public tasks in this area.

In this context, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has announced taking a modern approach towards cooperation with Polish diaspora and support for our compatriots abroad. New opportunities and international challenges, natural change in the Polish community, and increased presence of Poles in their second homelands call for the rephrasing of principles, setting new goals, and reorientation of instruments of the policy towards the Polish diaspora. The following will become a priority:

•             increasing the range and groups of entities participating in the implementation of social activities and tasks, in particular by going beyond the traditional understanding of Polish communities.

•             implementing innovative forms of financing

•             ensuring transparent access to project support and financing

•             and a new approach to teaching the Polish language

Minister Radosław Sikorski’s future specific exposé on policy towards the Polish diaspora and the work on a new government’s programme of cooperation with the Polish diaspora and Poles abroad are in line with Polish foreign policy. Cooperation with the nearly 20-million-strong Polish community abroad is to become inclusive and cross-party again. MFA has worked and will work on behalf of our compatriots outside Poland.

The Polish Foreign Ministry noted with great satisfaction the decision of 1 July 2024 to entrust the Polish diplomacy with new tasks and financial resources in the area of Polish diaspora policy, which was till now the responsibility of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.

We will take every effort, despite the difficult transition period, to promptly complete the pending calls for proposals and focus on streamlining the entire system to serve the Polish diaspora, Poles, and Poland.
