Polish diplomatic missions recognised for promoting World Bicycle Day

On the occasion of Foreign Service Day, Head of the Foreign Service Piotr Rychlik sent congratulatory letters to the Polish diplomatic posts which had made the most of this year’s World Bicycle Day to talk about Poland in an interesting, modern, and inspiring way.

Celebrated on 3 June, World Bicycle Day was established by United Nations Resolution of 12 April 2018 (A/RES/72/272) on the initiative of a Pole, Leszek Sibilski, PhD.

For Polish diplomatic posts, World Bicycle Day is an opportunity to organise a variety of events to promote all types of cycling and the bicycle as a healthy and effective means of transport.

In 2023, more than 100 Polish diplomatic missions across the world circulated information about the occasion, and nearly 60 committed themselves beyond expectations by organising a range of interesting events linked with cycling.

the following Polish diplomatic posts were among this year’s exceptionally active and innovative promoters of cycling, deserving special recognition on this account:

  • the Embassy of the Republic of Poland and the Polish Institute in Berlin, which co-organised with the local branch of the Pilecki Institute a four-day stretch of cycling events, including a cross-border bike rally from Berlin via Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice to Świecko;
  • the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations and the Polish Institute in New York, which prepared a cycling exhibition at the UN headquarters and a display of a unique glass bicycle constructed by Polish engineers;
  • the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ljubljana, which organised a cycling trip to raise funds to purchase a school bus for Ukrainian children from Kamianets-Podilskyi, with diplomats accredited to Slovenia as participants;
  • the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ottawa, which worked together with the mayor of the Canadian capital and organised a bike rally;
  • the Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Poland to UNESCO in Paris, which initiated and made possible the adoption by the UNESCO Executive Board in May 2023 of the first-ever decision “Bicycle for All” on bicycle for sustainable and healthy lifestyles.

  • The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tel Aviv
  • The Embassy of the Republic of Poland and the Polish Institute in Vilnius
  • The Polish Institute in Sofia
