Polish-Japanese consultations in Tokyo

25.03.2019

“We are happy that the Polish-Japanese relations are so multifaceted and we look forward to further developing them in the Jubilee Year 2019,” said the deputy chief of Polish diplomacy Maciej Lang during his meeting with Senior Deputy Foreign Minister Takeo Mori of Japan.

The consultations, which took place in Japan’s capital, focused on a broad range of bilateral topics. The agenda included Polish-Japanese economic cooperation and the prospects for its further development. The deputy ministers exchanged opinions about the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, which became effective on 1 February 2019, and mentioned the strong position of the PLL LOT Polish Airlines on the Japanese market.

The officials also discussed regional and global security, focusing on the normalization process in the Korean Peninsula. Poland is one of the few states that have their diplomatic missions both in Pyongyang and Seoul and actively participates in the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, along with Switzerland and Sweden.

During the meeting, the deputy ministers also talked about the centenary of the establishment of bilateral relations between Poland and Japan, which is celebrated in 2019.

Japan is one of Poland’s three strategic partners in Asia. Polish-Japanese relations were established in 1919, and Japan was the second non-European state (after the United States) to recognize Poland’s statehood in 1918. Today, Poland and Japan cooperate in many areas, including in the economy. The total value of Japanese direct investments in Poland in late 2017 was USD 887 million, making Japan the second largest Asian investor in Poland.
