"The State of Qatar is among Poland's close partners in the Middle East and our bilateral relations have developed strongly in recent years," said Deputy Foreign Minister Maciej Lang after a meeting with his Qatari counterpart, Ahmad Hassan Al-Hamadi. He also recalled the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Poland and Qatar which is celebrated this year.
The consultations focused on political and economic cooperation and security in the Middle East and Europe, also in the context of Poland’s non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council. "Qatar is a major economy of the Arab Peninsula and an important actor of the regional stability system," said Deputy Minister Lang.
The topics discussed also included the conflicts in Yemen, Libya, and Syria; the prospects for the way forward in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and the situation in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan. The deputy chief of Polish diplomacy noted the need for greater commitment from the international community to ensure peace and security as the basis of development in the Middle East region. "On behalf of the Polish Government I would like to thank the Qatari authorities for agreeing to station a Polish military contingent at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar," said Deputy Minister Lang.
The regular consultation meetings at the level of deputy foreign ministers of Poland and Qatar were initiated under the memorandum of cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries, signed on 21 April 1998, and are held alternately in Warsaw and Doha.
