Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding cyber attacks against the Australian healthcare sector
29.01.2024
Poland expresses solidarity with Australia and everyone whose personal data was compromised as a result of the ransomware attack on the healthcare sector in this country.
Millions of data were stolen from the health service provider Medibank and then disclosed on the dark web in 2022. Australia has accused a Russian citizen of the attack and imposed financial sanctions and travel ban on him. British and US governments informed about the introduction of similar sanctions against the alleged Russian cybercriminal. Poland strongly condemns ransomware attacks as well as all other forms of cybercrime. We support the application of UN norms of responsible State behavior in cyberspace. It is also necessary to consistently build resilience and capabilities necessary to effectively counteract attacks, in particular in key sectors such as health care, which is becoming increasingly sensitive to cybercriminals' activities since the COVID pandemic.
We support the European Union declaration regarding Australia ransomware attack [text of declaration] and actively work for constructive international cooperation to end impunity of malicious actors in cyberspace.
