Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
07.03.2024
Poland welcomes Sweden as the member state of the North Atlantic Alliance. It is a major event that strengthens the unity of the Euro-Atlantic community.
Sweden’s accession strengthens the security of Poland, of the Baltic Sea region and of the whole North Atlantic Alliance. It will contribute and further strengthen NATO’s collective deterrence and defence in response to the threat from Russia.
The accession of Sweden and previously Finland to NATO confirms that each country has the sovereign right to choose its own alliances. Decisions to join NATO are made exclusively by Alliance members and countries aspiring to membership.
NATO's "open door policy” remains an important factor in building the stability and security of the Euro-Atlantic area and should be continued. The best example of this is Poland, which 25 years after joining the Alliance is an important element in the defense of the eastern flank in Europe. We are convinced that cooperation with Sweden within NATO and the European Union will further strengthen our common security.
