On 1 December 2022, during its session in Rabat, the UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage granted the joint application of Poland, Austria, Czechia, Germany, Latvia, and Spain.
Timber rafting is Poland’s fifth entry on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. The whole process was coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
The delegation headed by Permanent Representative of Poland to UNESCO Mariusz Lewicki also included Counsellor for UNESCO at Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage Joanna Cicha-Kuczyńska, Polish Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco Krzysztof Karwowski, as well as representatives of Timber Rafting Brotherhood of Saint Barbara from Ulanów.
The application for inscription, coordinated by Poland, was highly praised by UNESCO experts. Particularly appreciated was exceptionally good cooperation of States Parties on the nomination and the engagement of communities and depositaries throughout the process, as well as the measures taken to protect and pass on the tradition.
