Trilogue meeting of foreign ministers of Poland, Romania, and Türkiye

26.06.2024

On 26 June, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski met with his Romanian and Turkish counterparts: Luminița Odobescu and Hakan Fidan. The Trilogue meeting was held in Helenów near Warsaw.

Minister Radoslaw Sikorski met with Minister Luminita Odobescu and Minister Hakan Fidan.

Two weeks before the Washington NATO summit, the ministers discussed ensuring regional security and stability: from the Baltic to the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

Taking place against the backdrop of Russia’s increasingly aggressive tactics, the talks covered the expected outcomes of the forthcoming NATO summit in Washington as well as the complex regional and global security situation. As Minister Sikorski noted, Poland has long-time ties of friendship with both Romania and Türkiye, which allowed frank discussions on matters of fundamental importance to our security and that of the entire Euro-Atlantic area. Poland’s chief diplomat expressed his satisfaction that our three countries share their position on the need to invest in security of NATO’s eastern flank. In this context, he pointed out the most important issues from the point of view of our security interests: the need to continue unconditional support for Ukraine as well as the continued strengthening of the Alliance against military and hybrid threats, which we encounter on a daily basis. At the same time, Minister Radosław Sikorski stressed that Poland understands the security challenges faced by our partners, which is why Polish military contingents are present in both Romania and Türkiye. “We are committed to maintaining this presence to support our allies,” added Poland’s top diplomat.

Operating since 2016, the Trilogue format involves Poland, Romania, and Türkiye. Its aim is to strengthen cooperation between the allies representing the largest countries of NATO’s eastern and southern flanks and develop a common position on the most relevant regional security issues. The previous Trilogue meeting at the foreign minister level was held in 2022 in Istanbul. The Trilogue enables a better mutual understanding of security priorities, which ultimately translates into a more effective NATO.
