18.07.2024
When visiting New York on 15–18 July, Minister Wiśniewski spoke during the general debate of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and in the High-Level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). He also opened an accompanying event co-organised by Poland concerning the role of resilient infrastructure in ensuring food security.
The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the main UN platform on sustainable development and on monitoring and reviewing the global implementation of the Agenda 2030. This year, the Forum was devoted to eradicating poverty and hunger, food security, reacting to climate change, promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions, as well as strengthening global partnerships for sustainable development.
Deputy Minister Wiśniewski participated in the most important high-level events of the HLPF. In his speech delivered during the general debate, he highlighted Poland’s involvement in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, including through the cooperation within the UN. He also addressed the expectations regarding the Summit of the Future, planned for September, which is meant to provide an opportunity to renew the countries’ engagement in the adherence to the UN Charter’s principles and to decide on specific global solutions promoting peace, international security, human rights, and sustainable development. In the debate during the High-Level Segment of the ECOSOC, the minister mentioned Poland’s involvement during the Council’s current term. He also noted that Poland finds such factors as resilience building, ensuring food security, and strengthening democratic institutions crucial to facilitating sustainable development.
The HLPF event “Bridging Gaps: Infrastructure's Role in Achieving Zero Hunger”, inaugurated by the minister, focused on the role of infrastructure and supply chain resilience in ensuring food security in the context of such global challenges as conflicts, climate change, and natural disasters. Poland co-organised the event with the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) as well as Mongolia’s and Botswana’s Permanent Missions to the UN.
Moreover, Minister Wiśniewski met with several high representatives of the UN, including Under-Secretary-General for Policy Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua, and Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support Elizabeth Spehar.
