“It is in our common interest to create conditions in which each person is able to realise his or her potential and aspirations,” Minister Jacek Czaputowicz emphasised at an award ceremony for students and teachers who took part in contests held by the MFA to mark the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has run three contests to mark the occasion: a drawing one for primary pupils in forms 1-6, an educational poster contest for primary pupils in forms 6-8, and an essay contest for students of lower secondary, post-lower secondary, and secondary schools. The contest were supported by and held under the honorary patronage of the minister of national education and the Centre for Education Development. Outlining the idea behind the contests, Minister Czaputowicz stressed that the European Convention on Human Rights is a subject of particular significance to the MFA as it is the foreign service that represents Poland before the European Court of Human Rights.
The event was also attended by Deputy Minister Piotr Wawrzyk, who was the head of the juries. The deputy chief of Polish diplomacy said that the MFA had received 433 entries. The juries selected 14 laureates of first, second and third prizes and 14 honourable mentions. There were also 12 winners among teachers and nine teachers received honourable mentions.
The ministers congratulated all the 28 laureates and thanked the 19 awarded teachers and parents for prompting children and young people to learn about human rights. They also thanked schools whose everyday educational mission has created the environment in which students can study this subject and score success in the contests.
The main goal of the contests run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was to increase the awareness of students, teachers, and schools of the rights and freedoms protected under the European Convention on Human Rights and of the role and activities of the European Court of Human Rights. The contests were also intended to strengthen the status of civic and human rights education at schools and to raise legal awareness and nurture social and civic skills among students and teachers.
