History
The Republic of Djibouti (République de Djibouti) became an independent state after the referendum of 8 May 1977. From 1896 untill 1977 the country stayed under French rule as French Somaliland (renamed as French Territory of the Afars and the Issas in 1967). Diplomatic relations with the government of President Hassan Guled Aptidon were established on 24 February 1980. According to the Constitution of 15 September 1992 Djibouti is a democratic republic with a presidential system. The President Ismail Omar Guelleh, in office since 1999, was re-elected in 2005, 2011 and 2016.
Political cooperation after 1989
The Ambassador of Poland to Ethiopia is also accredited to the Republic of Djibouti. The Honorary Consulate of Poland in Djibouti operated from 1997 untill 2007 under Abdourahman Mahamed Mahmoud Boreh. The efforts to appoint a new honorary consul are ongoing.
Economic cooperation

The Port of Djibouti and the Port of Doraleh make a key part of trade structure of the Horn of Africa. Polish-Djiboutian exchange remains low (around 10 million USD per year) with unstable dynamics and domination of export over import as its main characteristics.
