Russia's aggression against Ukraine, energy matters and the economic situation were the main topics of the meeting of EU Heads of State and Government in Prague. On the eve of the meeting, the inaugural summit of the European Political Community took place. Poland was represented by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
"Once again, I am making the claim that the ETS prices should drop by freeing up special allowances. The European Commission can do this, by fixing ETS prices at a certain level. Even if only for one or two years, it would lead to an immediate drop in energy prices. I am surprised that the EC, during the war in Ukraine, at such a difficult time, does not want to use this instrument," the head of the Polish government Mateusz Morawiecki stressed in Prague.
During the talks, the leaders discussed the European Union's support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's escalation measures, including the illegal annexation of further occupied Ukrainian territories, the announcement of partial mobilisation and the intensification of threats to use nuclear weapons. The leaders also held a discussion on ways to limit further price increases and the functioning of the EU energy market.
The European Political Community Summit served to deepen dialogue and cooperation in Europe on issues related to security, energy, climate and the economic situation. 27 EU Heads of State and Government and 17 leaders of partner countries (Norway, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and the Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia) participated in the summit.
