World Urban Forum

The World Urban Forum is the most important and largest conference on the creation and implementation of urban policies in the world, which is organised by UN-Habitat, the UN agenda on urbanisation and urban settlements.

Concept

It is a solution to the problems most cities in the world today are facing – rapid urbanisation and its impact on communities, cities, economies, and climate change. The goal of WUF is to improve knowledge on sustainable urban development through an open debate.

WUF is an opportunity to exchange good practices and share acquired experiences. The meeting results in recommendations for urban policy and regional development for governments, regions and cities. The event takes place every 2 years and brings together over 20,000 people, including representatives of governments, regions, cities, NGOs, as well as financial organisations and institutions.

History

The history of the World Urban Forum organisation dates back to 2002. At that time it was hosted by Nairobi, Kenya. The hosts of the World Urban Forum were respectively: Barcelona, Vancouver, Nanjing, Rio de Janeiro, Naples, Medellin and Kuala Lumpur. This year it will be organised by Abu Dhabi, and in 2022 the host of WUF11 will be Katowice.

Vision

According to a report prepared by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, 55 percent of people worldwide live in urban areas. Over the decade, this ratio is expected to rise to almost 70 percent. The urbanisation growth rate is fast. It is therefore necessary to have a discussion with experts from around the world to develop universal solutions which will contribute to sustainable urban development.
