Bhutan

Diplomatic relations between Poland and Bhutan were established in 2012.

Political cooperation

Historical view 

The Republic of Poland established diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Bhutan on November 29, 2012. A joint statement on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed by the Permanent Representatives of both countries to the United Nations in New York. The document came into force on the day of signing. In Bhutan, the Polish ambassador from New Delhi is accredited. Bhutan does not have a diplomatic mission in Poland.

Political cooperation after 1989

In May 2011 Poland was visited by the wife of King of Bhutan Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, who met with Anna Komorowska and inaugurated the activities of the Polish-Bhutanese Friendship Society. On October 8-10, 2015, the first visit of the Polish delegation took place - it which was chaired by Director of the Asia-Pacific Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Michał Kołodziejski. The delegation included 10 companies - laureates of the "Greenevo" program, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation was received by foreign minister Lyonpo Damcho Dorji and five deputy ministers of ministries: economy, agriculture, planning, information and communication, and infrastructure. The purpose of the visit was to initiate bilateral political and economic contacts. An important element of the visit were discussions on cooperation on the UN forum and the possibility of Poland's development assistance. Plans for cooperation in the field of agriculture and urban transport were also discussed. In November 2022, on the 10th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, Poland opened an Honorary Consulate in Thimphu, Bhutan.

Economic cooperation

Foreign Trade 

In 2016, trade between Poland and Bhutan reached USD 295,000, which means an increase of 6% compared to 2015. Exports amounted to USD 246,000 (showing an increase by as much as 280% year on year), and imports USD 49,000 (a decrease by 74% in the same period). As a result, Poland recorded a positive trade balance of USD 198,000, which is a reversal of the result from 2015 (- 102 thousand USD). The export was dominated by mechanical and electrical devices - mainly saws, which were valued at USD 192,000. Among the imported goods, the largest group were fabrics and textiles worth USD 46,000. It is worth noting that Poland has not signed bilateral economic agreements with Bhutan. 

Treaty cooperation 

There do not exist any instances of treaty cooperation at the present time.
