Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry visits Poland

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry paid an official visit to Poland on 18-19 July. During his visit he met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski and the Deputy Marshal of the Senate, Magdalena Biejat and Deputy Marshal of the Sejm Monika Wielichowska. Minister Ali Sabry also delivered a lecture at the University of Warsaw and visited the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. This was the first visit to Poland by a Sri Lankan Foreign Minister after 1989.

The main topics of discussion with Minister R. Sikorski included bilateral and regional security issues. Discussions aimed to strengthen political and economic relations, covering areas such as trade, new avenues of cooperation - including potential cooperation between Polish and Sri Lankan seaports - and the expansion of the legal and contractual framework. The meeting reaffirmed the mutual desire to capitalise on the potential for bilateral cooperation. Ministers also discussed Russian aggression against Ukraine and security in the Indian Ocean region.

Minister Ali Sabry also visited the Senate of the Republic of Poland, where he met with Deputy Marshal Magdalena Biejat and Deputy Marshal of the Sejm Monika Wielichowska.

During his visit, the Minister delivered a lecture at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, where he discussed Sri Lanka's foreign policy priorities as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). His lecture focused on relations with India, China, Japan and the European Union. He also visited Krakow where he met with representatives of the Jagiellonian University. Discussions focused on academic cooperation in STEM education and opportunities for public-private partnerships in research on sustainable agricultural practices.
